Week ten

This weeks session was much like week six' session in that i was mostly allowed to work on all of my deliverable's for the fast approaching presentation.

However at the start of the lesson Andy did go through some very interesting things about freelance work and how to make oneself noticed, for example he mentioned that one really good way to get your work noticed by others and gain attention is by setting up your own website and also getting any sounds you make out onto as many websites as possible, even if you may dislike them, such as myspace, bebo, youtube, anywhere an audience can listen in.

After talking about freelance work Andy quickly reminded about the importance of structuring and organizing our work well when handing it in, he also decided to help us with the task by creating an example for us all which i found incredibly generous.

After which it was time to continue working on delivereble's for the next presentation.

The most important thing taken from this week, personally i think would have to be the in formation about how to get noticed if i am interested in freelance work i think it was very nice of Andy to go through so much trouble to inform us all of multiple different ways to get noticed by contractors and the public.

Week nine

This weeks session was all about cut scenes to further extend out knowledge in the area and to also prepare us for the short cut scene we Will soon have to be presenting.

In this session i was shown various videos all of which were cut scenes where we concentrated on the audio used, Andy explained how we could use parts of audio we have already created such as sound effects, and mix them into cut scene audio.

One of the cut scenes shown was the opening cut scene to 'Metal gear solid 4' one of my favorite games and favorite opening cut scenes of all time due to its absolute amazing use of string instruments and background sound effects at the beginning then slowly descending into chaos.

This session was really enlightening for me as not only did i get to watch one of my favourite cut scenes of all time but i also learned many different ways that i could perhaps someday create such a soundtrack for such an amazing cut scene.

Week eight

In this weeks sound session it was a presentation on soundscapes involving different videos being presented talking about the various sound effects, music and ambient audio in games, all of which fall under 'soundscape'

one of the videos was a video on 'Flashback' on the Amiga, the reason behind this video was to see and most importantly hear some of the really good soundscape ideas that had been used within the game.

The main thing i took from this sound session is the amazing sounscapes used within flashback showing just how much they can influence the game and the gamer. I will definitely be paying a lot more attention to soundscapes within games that i play to see how they compare.

Week seven

This weeks session for sound was a presentation session, i was required to present one of my two created soundtracks (using logic) and five sound effects i had created/collected myself.

I enjoyed this weeks session although nervous at first i was very proud of my work and just as proud to present it, i gained a lot of very valuable feedback from fellow students and shall be using that feedback to enhance my soundtrack and sound effects further.

I believe, although this weeks session was not a lesson as such, that i have managed to take away the knowledge that confidence is key when it comes to presenting, its best to speak clearly and not clam up, it was also highly recommended by Andy that none of us talk down our work that we should be proud of what we have done even if we don't fully like it ourselves. This to me is a great asset for me as presenting has not been a strong point in the past and i will be remembering these key things for my next presentation.

Week six

The session this week was a very enjoyable session, Andy was nice enough to allow us to work on our soundtracks that we would be presenting next week.

Therefore for this session i spent all of my time using logic and studying its different features, discovering how to fade parts of the soundtrack in and out. I also found out how to change the tempo and add different effects to the track, which i found incredibly helpful.

I cannot write a lot about this week since, as stated, i spent all of my time using logic to create my soundtrack, however i can comment on how excited i am that i managed to discover how to fade parts of my track in and out, change the tempo and also add effects, these will come in very handy.

Week five

For this weeks session of sound, i was introduced to how incredibly important correctly organising and presenting work is.

I was told why storing my work in the correct way is so important, so that if anyone, even myself, is looking for a certain file and all of the files have odd names like 'b4532'  for example, then it will be extremely difficult to locate the file, however if the file were named correctly for example, 'gun sound 1' then the person looking will know if that is or is not the file they are looking for, in short arranging my folders neatly and naming my files smartly can save a lot of hassle for myself and others in the future.

The most important thing i took away from this weeks session is the different ways that i can organise my work weather it be using folders or even zip. i found this to be very helpful and interesting and i will definitely be sure to organize my work to the best of my abilities form now on.

Week Four

Week four was a very nice follow up to week three, I was firstly introduced to a very unique way of presenting sound on a video, where the creator presents the sounds verbally in a textual way, here is what we were shown;

Video obtined from "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eF5c__8DFA&feature=player_embedded"  posted by "essenmitsosse"

 As you can probably see the creator is using his voice to create sounds/sound effects, this may seem like an odd thing to do, however in some situations it can work very well, like here. After seeing this video it reminded me of one i had seen some time ago;

 Even though this video was created in a humorous way, and all that it consists of is the creator editing a video of 'Super Street Fighter 4' and putting his voice over the top, it still shows another example of how sounds can be created differently.

After seeing the video Andy gave us a recap on the third weeks lesson about how important it is that a track fits in with its game and went on to show us a video about the 'Scarface video game' explaining the importance of the sound effects within a video game, this was interesting because it shows that even in video games it is possible to very easily go over the top and ruin the game via sound, showing that a lot of concentration and effort must be put in.

 Then there was a recap on foley and we were shown a video on how Disney use foley for a lot of their films. This was very interesting because it gave insight into how many of the famous sounds created by Disney were made;

Upon finishing this video Andy spoke about the importance of structure when writing a soundtrack/song and showed a video with tips on songwriting and structure;

 This was the most important point of this weeks lesson for me as it will help me greatly with structuring my two, one minute soundtracks.

week three

The main focus in week three was 'the importance of staying within the theme of the game you are working on', expressing how important it is to not veer off from the game you are making, an example of a game doing this well is 'Red dead redemption's' far Away Cutscene track written by Jose Gonzales';

 This is an excellent example of a soundtrack fitting in extremely well with the game and adding great feeling and meaning to the game.

 An example of a soundtrack not working well with the game would have to be the street fighter opening theme;

 There have been many complaints from fans about this soundtrack as it is not seen to link at all well with the street fighter theme.

 As well as being presented with good and bad examples we were asked what we thought were good and bad examples of games we have played, i chose the 'Dead Space' opening theme as a good example;

 I believe this to also be a fantastic example of a sound track fitting in with the game very well, it is mysterious and extreemly discomforting and eerie just like the game 'Dead Space'.

 My main choice of 'bad' an example of a bad soundtrack was street fighter but i hae already mentioned that, the only other soundtracks i found not to fit in well with there games are;

Rainbow Six Vegas
Shadowrun

 My only reasoin for selecting these two is because i found that the tracks fitted in ok, however they were very repetative and basic, because this is so widely spread i cannot show an example.

 After talking about the good and bad soundtracks, Andy showed us some videos on the famous 'Wilhelm Scream', the reason beind this was to express a sounds re-usability, and this was an excelent example as it has been used very, very much.

 Finally, we spoke about different kinds of sound recording one that stood out the most was 'Foley' a different kind of sound recording where the sound artist records in live action, using various every day tools, for example pounding pinapple halves against a wooden board to give the sound of heavy footsteps. We were shown a video of how foley was used in the 'Star wars republic commando game';

 This part of the sound unit really interested an amazed me as it is a very unique way to record sound, it also looks extremely enjoyabe, therefore this would have to be the main important point i have taken away from sound this week as i have learned so much and now desperately want to try out 'foley' sound recording.

Week Two

During the second week I asked Andy what sound programs would be best to use if we did not have a MAC at home and he suggested two main ones to the class they were 'Audacity' which he noted was a very good sound program on the PC even though it may not be as good as logic pro.

 After talking about these different programs Andy asked us how we all felt about the prior week, specifically about being "thrown in the deep end" with logic pro, I found that it was very confusing at first but with time it became understandable and i think it is a very good way to learn as u build up your own personal ways of using the program.

 After Andy put up multiple videos of classic video games such as 'Streets of Rage', 'Zelda' and 'Gods', concentrating on the different soundtracks each had and how they affected the player, and added to the game. Then Andy mentioned the various old consoles such as the commodor 64 and the Zx Spectrum, this was to look at the power that the old consoles had when it came to sound and how sound was created, stored and projected from these systems compared to the consoles of today.

 This weeks most important point to me is that of the fact that old consoles specifically the commodore 64, and the gameboy to produce chip tunes this was incredibly interesting to me and i would really enjoy trying it some time.

First Week

The first lesson of sound consisted of being introduced to the unit and the concept of sound, all students were asked to think about a game theme tune or soundtrack that is very memorable to them and why, then we were asked to present these verbally to the rest of the class.

 The theme tune of my choice was the very classic but very powerful metal gear solid soundtrack, this was because i find the metal gear solid soundtrack to be very emotionally powerful.

 After this I was introduced to a brand new sound software that i had not heard of or used before, mostly because it is on MAC, this software was Logic Pro, i was shown the basics of it an allowed to have some time getting to know the program.

 While getting to know the program i created this little sound clip.

 After showing this to our lecturer, Andy, he informed me that what i had created was made by adding and combining various looping sound snippets together, he also told me that if i wanted to create my own personal sounds i could simply select the instrument i want to make sounds with, click 'piano scroll' at the bottom of the screen and i can then begin making different sounds with that instrument.

 The most important thing I took away from this lesson i believe was being introduced to logic and the various ways i could create sounds.
